Health Disparities in Jail Populations

Converging Epidemics that Impact Population Health and Health Care in Coconino County

A key need is to understand the confluence of behavioral health issues, infectious disease, and chronic illnesses. These diseases show significant patterns of health disparities in jail populations, compared with the general population. The incarcerated individuals also show very similar patterns of circulation through local emergency rooms and public health facilities. This project will investigate the confluence, flow, overlap, and unique elements of population health conditions individuals who are incarcerated in Coconino County jails. The overall goals of the project will be to 1) identify the "circulatory" patterns of the jail population, 2) identify the multiple diagnosis characteristics and impacts of the jail population, and 3) create a model that can be used by the criminal justice primary care hospitals to optimize effective management of the risk profile of jail populations.
